The PNG Huli men are said to be the fiercest warriors in the world. But they have a surprising soft side -- an obsession with hair. Boys spend years constructing elaborate wigs.
"It is very important for a young Huli boy to have a wig. That's why the boys go to wig school", explains Huli Harold Hayake. To grow strong, healthy hair, the young men live together in a monastic lifestyle under the guidance of a wig master. Only after their wig is ready can they marry.

I once read an account of ancient Lemuria which said that the women were in charge (a matriarchal culture) and that the men lived apart and had their own separate living quarters. This looks very much like that description. Lemuria was, for the most part, not warlike but they were corrupted and disintegrated like Atlantis. This group in PNG looks like the last remnants of them.

Dancing with the Huli Wigmen
This was a surprisingly not-so-difficult clip to get. I arrived in Tari, Papua New Guinea with no plans or arrangements and no idea what I was doing. I met Patrick on the runway and told him I hoped to find the Huli Wigmen. He said "no problem" and we hopped in a truck. I visited some Huli villages and wandered around the area all morning. Patrick took me to the Wigmen's village and introduced me. It took them an hour or so to get dressed up, and then we had to sit around waiting for the rain to stop. It stopped, then this happened, then I paid them for their time, and that was that.
Broken Promises - Papua New Guinea
August 1994 Produced by International Award Winning Film Maker Wayne Coles-Janess, by ipso-facto Production for the ABCs Foreign Correspondent. The first piece produced in Rebel controlled areas and includes dramatic front line action. On the Pacific Island of Bougainville a man lies dying from gunshot wounds. He is a victim of one of many violations in the cease-fire between Papua New Guinea's Government forces and the Bougainville Revolutionary Army. The BRA's struggle for independence claimed the lives of over 3000 people, but they remain determined to fight on. Using a mix of weapons, some of which date back to the WWII Japanese occupation, the BRA continue to hold out against PNG's superior forces. Meanwhile, the Bougainville people, whose villages face indiscriminate destruction, are under a PNG blockade which has cut off food and medicine supplies. Exclusive interview with Bougainville's president and unique footage from behind BRA lines.
Lifting the Hood - Iraq
November 2005 As the 'hooded man' in the infamous Abu Ghraib pictures, Haj Ali became an icon of everything that was wrong with the US occupation. He tells his story and we hear from other prisoners "They stretched my hands in this position and attached the wires to them", states Haj Ali. "It felt like my eyes were popping out. I couldn't stand it." He spent three months being physically and psychologically tortured at Abu Ghraib. Interrogators wanted him to use his knowledge as a community leader to inform on other people. "They said 'give us the name of anyone you hate and we'll see it as co-operation and help you.'" In a nearby cell, army general Abu Maan was also being interrogated. "They stripped me and took photos of me in degrading positions", he recalls. Both men are angry that only junior officers have been disciplined for the abuse that went on at Abu Ghraib. Ilham al-Jumaili's husband Munadel was tortured to death there. It's his corpse that Sabrina Harman was photographed gloating over. "We didn't expect America to take Munadel and never return him", she laments. The victims of Abu Ghraib remain haunted by their experiences. In the words of Haj Ali "Only one thing has changed. The cameras have now disappeared The abuse still continues." Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Tribal Fighting - Papua New Guinea
July 2007 Steve Marshall reports on the changing face of tribal warfare in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Highland tribes have traditionally used violence to solve disputes - over everything from land control to wives and livestock. Now, the disputes continue, but the weaponry has changed. These days many illegal guns have made their way into the hands of tribal fighters. From bows and arrows to illegal semi-automatic weapons -- the fallout is devastating. "When he was killed I was left with three kids to look after and it's hard for me", a widow in the Western Highlands tells Marshall. Tribal fighters confirmed that the drugs for guns trade between PNG and the top end of Australia is also alive and well. "Some of our businessman who are out there in Australia they buy the guns and send it up to us here", said tribal fighter Moses Kauga. At a time when PNG voters are going to the polls for the 2007 national elections, Steve Marshall also reveals claims that PNG politicians themselves might be involved in the trade.

Guinea Pig Toy
Guinea pigs are wonderful pets but there are certain things they need in order to live a happy life. Of course they would love to have a guinea pig toy or two in their cage, but you first have to ask yourself if the cage is big enough. It is very important that they have enough space to move as well as exercise, so if the cage is just big enough for them to do those things, rather wait until you can get them a bigger cage and then buy them a guinea pig toy. If you are 100% sure that your cage is big enough, your guinea pig would love to have a toy to play with!
